Technical Issues Reported by Nigeria Immigration Service in Online Passport Applications

Recently, several issues have been reported by Nigerians trying to complete their passport online registration through the NIS's portal. The numerous reports have put pressure on NIS and force them to officially announced the that it online passport registration portal is currently having a technical glitches.

In a statement named “Technical Glitches with Online Payment Platform” published on August 23, 2024, the NIS admitted to the downtime and apologized for the inconvenience it has caused.

The immigration agency - through the issued statement - apologized for the current downtime affecting online passport applications. However, the agency assures the general public that services will be restored as soon as possible.

This technical issue comes shortly after the NIS announced a fee increase for passport booklets, effective September 1, 2024. The cost for a 32-page booklet with a five-year validity will rise from N35,000 to N50,000, while the 64-page booklet with a ten-year validity will increase from N70,000 to N100,000.

Due to this announcement, we looked into social media to find out more about the technical glitches reported by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS). We found that many Nigerian passport applicants are struggling with the NIS's portal system due to problems with validating their National Identification Number (NIN) and unexpected appointment rescheduling.
