OPAY MasterCard: Everything You Need To Know

OPay virtual card works well for locally-initiated online transactions while it physical debit card can be used in-store, any ATM nationwide and on any POS terminal in Nigeria.
Many OPay customers in Nigeria are asking if the fintech offers a Mastercard, as they believe that having either a Mastercard or Visa card would enable them to complete international transactions, like making purchases on e-commerce sites such as Alibaba and AliExpress.
But it’s quite disappointing to let you that despite OPay popularity and reach in the Nigerian financial landscape, it does not offer a MasterCard or VISA card.
The two spending cards OPay offers, physical debit card and virtual card, can be used for online transaction such as payment for streaming platforms like YouTube Premium, Apple Music and many more in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, it worth mentioning that OPay and Mastercard have partnered to promote a cashless ecosystem, advance digital financial inclusion for millions to underserved part of Nigeria, but doesn’t offer a Mastercard debit card on the OPay app.
According to information on Mastercard’s website, “the collaboration enables OPay consumers and merchants in the region—including Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya, Pakistan, South Africa, and the UAE—to engage with brands and businesses worldwide through a Mastercard virtual payment solution linked to the OPay eWallet.”
In nutshell, OPay is not currently offering a physical Mastercard or an online Visa card in Nigeria. If you need a card for international transactions, you might consider alternatives like the Chipper Cash Dollar Card.
